Salewa is a mountain sports equipment retailer founded in 1935 in Munich. By 1939, Salewa already produced Backpacks. In 1961, it introduced the crampon and launched in 1969 the Chouinard Rigid Crampon. In 1990, Oberalp acquires Salewa, the leading manufacturing company in mountaineering sports in Europe. One year later, Salewa launched the Totoga line of kids` clothing. The brand has also expanded its activity to footwear, the final step in establishing Salewa as a true mountain sports brand.
